Look, there are novelists who can mine the dismal degradations of their lives and write first rate books and there are those who just didn't have the talent. She falls in the latter category, that's all. The twentieth century provided us with many writers who fictionalize their experiences of unspeakable horror: Solzhenitsyn with his novel of life in the gulag (A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich) or his experiences in the Soviet medical system (Cancer Ward); Elie Wiesel's depiction of the concentration camps in Night; Maxim Gorki's insights into the Leninist period in The Life of a Useless Man. There simply is no comparison with a first rate novelist who can use story flow and character development to make their point and someone who simply states her points in bombast soliloquies for 1000 pages or so.

Sorry. Just don't understand her appeal.

Well it’s been over twenty years since I read Atlas Shrugged so I cannot attest to a yea or a nay regarding plot or character development, story building and so forth. My memory isn’t as good as it used to be. At the time it seemed fine to me but what did I know being youthful and all that.

I know the point you are making however I still recommend the movie The Fountainhead.

When I read Atlas Shrugged it took me two attempts but I don’t necessarily hold this completely against Rand. I was around 17 and didn’t have, what I now call, the fortitude to finish her book or any other long novel. I also failed to finish Lord of the Rings first time through. You read a lot of boring things everyman, there has got to be something more that irritates you about Rand.

My generation was brought up on Rand philosophy. In college we looked at her in greater depth and the impact she has had in the USA. This article is interesting about Rand.

I never heard of this movie before. So I looked it up and here is a taste of it.
The story line seems to be the martians have no one on mars to hand out presents so they kidnap Santa. A comical one at that. Is this correct Biff?

The article is eleven pages everyman. Can't you find some discord against a bit shorter?

I skimmed most of it but I didn't see where the author of the article named Rand a "third rate novelist pushing a second rate philosophy". Most of the article droaned on and on comparing specific areas of the book to other authors. Does this mean that she stole or ripped off her philosophy from others? If you could give me your run down, what am I supposed to be seeing here?

Universal vulgarism rather than universal politicization? I think that they are both bad.

Looks to me like this person desires to hate Ayn Rand more than desires to objectively criticize her work.
